Description
The Department of Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for up to two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions beginning as soon as Fall 2024 in the broad areas of plant cell and molecular biology or biochemistry. Candidates should be uncovering fundamental plant biological processes, including but not limited to photosynthesis, growth, physiology and development, resilience, biotic interactions or other high impact areas of plant science. Applicants applying state-of-the-art cell and molecular approaches, such as single cell analyses, quantitative imaging, multi-omics, and advanced data science are particularly encouraged. Candidates should have a proven track record of innovation and high impact research and will be expected to build a vigorous, externally-funded research program with an international profile. The successful candidate will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

Responsibilities
The candidate will be expected to conduct cutting-edge scholarly research as well as provide service to the department, college, university and academic community nationally or internationally. The candidate will also perform teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as supervision of graduate research. The successful candidate, as a member of the College of Letters & Science, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college's commitment to diversity among all aspects of their teaching, research, and service.

Qualifications
PhD in Biology or related field by the start date.

A minimum of 1 year of postdoctoral research by the start of the appointment with an emphasis on plant cell and molecular approaches or related research areas. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster an inclusive and equity-centered teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.

Description
A postdoctoral position is available immediately at University of Wisconsin-Madison. A highly motivated individual is sought to analyze molecular and cellular changes associated with desiccation tolerance in plants and other organisms. These studies will integrate advanced light and electron tomography imaging with molecular genetics and biochemistry, in the laboratory of Dr. Marisa Otegui.

The postdoctoral fellow will be a member of the Water and Life Interface Institute (WALII). WALII studies how life interacts with water, from the molecular to the organismal level, across plants, fungi, and animals. WALII is a virtual institute, with scientists located at nine research facilities across the United States. Working together, WALII team members aim to uncover the rules by which organisms interact with water, exploring four integrated themes: 1) the physical and molecular determinants that allow organisms to survive in the solid state; 2) rehydration responses in desiccation-tolerant and -sensitive systems; 3) the molecular grammar of desiccation tolerance conferred by intrinsically disordered proteins; and 4) the short- and long-term evolutionary history of desiccation tolerance. WALII team members have diverse expertise, ranging from biophysics to plant biology, and experience with several desiccation-tolerant and -sensitive systems.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell biology, imaging, plant biology, genetics, or a related field.
• Experience with microscopy imaging.
• Excellent written and oral presentation skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with transmission electron microscopy and cryo-electron microscopy.
